- Does Calypso support international fonts?
Does Calypso support international character sets?
Yes. Starting with Calypso v2.4, you can send and receive messages with single-byte character sets. Calypso does not support double-byte character sets at this time.
In the mailbox properties Character Sets tab, you can associate any font installed on your system with a character set so that the message will be displayed correctly.
Calypso supports the following character sets:
U.S. ASCII
EUC-KR
ISO-8859-1 (Latin 1)
ISO-8859-2 (Latin 2)
ISO-8859-3 (Latin 3)
ISO-8859-4 (Latin 4)
ISO-8859-6 (Arabic)
ISO-8859-7 (Greek)
ISO-8859-8 (Hebrew)
ISO-8859-5 (Cyrillic)
ISO-8859-9 (Latin 5)
ISO-2022-KR
ISO-2022-JP
ISO-2022-JP2
KOI-8R (Cyrillic)
Windows-1250 (Central Europe)
Windows-1251 (Cyrillic)
Windows-1253 (Greek)
- What is the difference between single-byte and double-byte character sets?
A single-byte character set is a set of characters or symbols that can be represented with one byte. Most American and European languages use single-byte character sets.
A double-byte character set requires two bytes to represent all of the characters. Most East Asian languages (like Chinese or Korean) require double-byte character sets because their alphabet is much larger. Calypso does not support double-byte character sets at this time.
- Can I configure the window layout of the Mailbox view?
Can I configure the arrangement of the folder list, summary list and preview box?
Yes, you can configure the orientation of the folder list, summary list and preview box in Mailbox view. Click Window Layout from the Window menu.

Calypso does not support these features in this version.
Version 3.x:
In Compose view, click Format, then Insert Image. If Format is not in the menu, open the Window menu and click Show Rich Text (HTML).
- In what ways can I minimize my Calypso mailbox?
Can I minimize Calypso to the icon tray instead of the taskbar?
Can I hide Calypso when it is minimized?
There are three settings for minimizing the Calypso mailbox:
Setting Description:
- Minimize to taskbar:
This is the default setting. When minimized, the Calypso icon is displayed in the system taskbar.
- Minimize to icon tray:
When minimized, the Calypso icon is displayed in the icon tray.
- Hide when minimized:
This requires the Calypso tray monitor. When minimized, there is no icon for the mailbox. To restore the mailbox, select the mailbox from the tray monitor's right-click menu.
To configure how Calypso will minimize, select the appropriate option in
the mailbox properties Miscellaneous tab.
- What is the icon tray?
The icon tray is an area of the Windows system taskbar. It is located where the time is displayed. Usually this is the lower-right corner of the screen.
- What is the difference between a mailbox password and an account password?
A mailbox password is a security password that you assign to your Calypso mailbox. If you lock the mailbox (Click the Mailbox menu, then click Lock), you must type this password to unlock it. The mailbox password is optional. If you want to remove or change your mailbox password, click here.
An account password is assigned by your e-mail administrator (often your ISP). This is the password that you must type to log in to your mail server and retrieve mail. If your account password has changed, you can modify Calypso's settings in the appropriate account properties tab.
Version 2.x:
Account Status tab
Version 3.x:
Mail Server tab
Changing the password in Calypso will not change the password on the mail server. To change your password on the mail server, contact your e-mail administrator.
- How do I change or delete my mailbox password?
To change your mailbox password, you must know your old password.
Open Mailbox Properties.
In the Mailbox Status tab, click the Password button.
In the Password Change dialog box, type the old password. If you did not have a password, then do not type anything.
Then type the new password twice. If you do not want a password on your mailbox, do not type anything.
Click OK to save the new password.
If you did not type a new password, you will not be prompted for a password when you open the mailbox.
If you lock the mailbox and you do not have a password, click anywhere on the Mailbox view, do not type a password, then click OK.

Receiving Mail
- What is POP3?
POP3 is version 3 of the Post Office Protocol. It is one of the two mail protocols Calypso supports to retrieve mail from your mail server. The mail server and client must use the same mail protocol.
- What is APOP?
APOP is an acronym for Authenticated Post Office Protocol. APOP is a secure method of logging in to a POP3 mail server. Normal POP3 authentication sends the password to the mail server in ASCII. This could be intercepted by a program that reads network traffic, thereby compromising the security of your account. APOP encrypts the password.
- Does Calypso support APOP?
Yes, starting with version 2.4, Calypso supports APOP. You can configure Calypso to use APOP in the Mail Server tab of account properties. Your POP3 mail server must also support APOP.
- What is IMAP4?
IMAP4 is version 4 of the Internet Message Access Protocol. It is one of the two mail protocols Calypso supports to retrieve mail from your mail server. The mail server and client must use the same mail protocol.
- What IMAP4 functionality does Calypso support?
Calypso supports the following IMAP4 features:
- Retrieving the mail from the default folder (inbox).
- Retrieving the message header only.
- Downloading X bytes of the message.
- Deleting the message from the mail server.
We plan to implement other IMAP4 features, but we do not have a schedule of when these features will be available.
- How do I mark a message as read without actually opening it?
There are several ways in Mailbox view to mark a message as read. First you must select one or more messages in the summary list, then do one of the following:
- From the Messages menu, select Mark Read.
- Right-click in the summary list and select Mark Read.
- Type Ctrl+R on your keyboard.
- You can also mark all messages in a folder as read using the right-click menu for that folder.
- Can I retrieve only a portion of an incoming message?
Yes. Calypso allows you to download
- the entire message
- only the message header
- a portion of the message (the first X lines or X bytes)
In the account properties Incoming Mail tab, you can configure how Calypso retrieves mail for this account. Use the What's This Help for detailed explanations.
- What authentication methods does Calypso support for checking mail?
Calypso supports Normal (plain text), APOP, and SPA authentication methods. You can configure the authentication method of Calypso in the Mail Server tab of account properties. Your POP3 mail server must also support the selected method.
- Normal authentication
provides no password protection, sending the user ID and password in plain text.
- APOP (Authenticated Post Office Protocol)
encrypts the password when logging in.
- SPA (Secure Password Authentication)
makes use of some Windows system components for authenticating to the server. When logging into a SPA server, the connection is passed to a Windows component for authentication. Windows will then determine the best authentication method that is supported by both your computer and the mail server to authenticate the login.

Sending Mail
- What is SMTP?
SMTP is an acronym for Simple Mail Transport Protocol. It is the mail server that sends your mail.
- My SMTP mail server requires that I check mail before sending. How do I do that?
You must configure the e-mail account to send mail when checking (not send immediately).
To do this, go to Account | Properties | Outgoing Mail and choose "Send when checking mail". This tells Calypso to only send mail after doing a mail check.
The mail check will take place per your settings under Mailbox | Properties | Mailbox Status.
- How many addresses can I enter in the To, Copy and Blind Copy fields of a message?
A lot. The size of each field is 64 KB which translates to approximately 55,000 - 60,000 characters of address information. The number of addresses you can enter in each field will depend on the length of the addresses.
The Subject field is also 64 KB.
Some mail servers may have size limitations for the header.
- Why do recipients see the message as one long line?
The recipient's e-mail application does not support quoted printable encoding, so you need to send the message with word wrap.
- Can I set the maximum line length in messages I send?
Does Calypso have "word wrap"?
Yes. In the account properties Outgoing Mail tab, select the Word Wrap check box. When Calypso sends messages, it will limit lines to X characters (the default is 76), regardless of the paragraph length. Each line will separated by a hard line break.
Starting with Calypso v2.4, you can configure how many characters per line the message will have before the hard line break.
By default, Calypso sends messages using quoted printable encoding format.
- What is "quoted printable encoding"?
By default, Calypso sends messages using quoted printable encoding which permits lines longer than 76 characters. This allows the receiving e-mail program to decode the paragraph and format the message to fit the message viewing area.
Some e-mail applications do not support quoted printable encoding or do not support it correctly. The recipient may see the message with "=" at the end of each line or the paragraphs are displayed as one long line. To correct this problem, you can configure Calypso to send the message with word wrap.
- Can I use any ASCII/text file for a signature?
Yes. With Calypso, you can use any ASCII file as a signature.
In the account properties Signature tab, click Browse to find the text file.
Select the file and click OK.
Select the Attach Signature to Outgoing Mail check box.
- Can I use multiple signatures in a message?
Can I insert a signature anywhere in the message?
Yes, starting with Calypso v2.4, you can insert one or more signatures anywhere in the message in the following manner:
- Place your cursor in the message body.
- From the Options menu, click Insert Signature, then select a signature.
- This will override any default signature you may have configured for the account in the Signature tab of account properties.
- What is return receipt?
A return receipt is a confirmation from the recipient's mail server that it received the message. Not all mail servers send return receipts. Many of them manage a high volume of mail and do not want to spend time sending return receipts.
A return receipt does not signify that the recipient downloaded the message or read the message, just that the mail server received it.
- How can I verify if someone received my message?
How can I verify if someone read my message?
You cannot in Calypso 2.4 or earlier. See the question above.
You can in Calypso 3.0 if Opened Rcpt. is selected when composing the message and the person receiving the message has not disabled this feature. Both the sender and the receiver need to be using Calypso 3.0.
- What is Blind Send™?
Blind Send is a unique Calypso feature that sends a copy of the message to each recipient specified in the To field. Each person specified in the To field does not see any of the other recipient's names or e-mail addresses. This allows you to send a message to many people and preserve privacy and confidentiality.
When Blind Send is enabled, Copy and Blind Copy are unavailable. Blind Send can be enabled or disabled using the check box at the bottom of the Compose view.
- What is the difference between copy and blind copy?
What is blind copy?
Blind copy is similar to regular copy with a distinct difference: the recipients in the To and Copy fields do not know people in the Blind Copy field received the message. The person who receives a blind copy does not know about other blind copy recipients either.
- What is the difference between blind copy and Blind Send™?
With Blind Send, the recipient does not see any other e-mail addresses in the To field. The Copy and Blind Copy fields are unavailable.
With blind copy, the recipient sees all e-mail addresses in the To and Copy fields, and none of the recipients in the Blind Copy field.
- What authentication methods does Calypso support for sending mail?
Calypso supports only plain text and SPA authentication methods when sending mail. You can configure the authentication method of Calypso in the Mail Server tab of account properties. Your SMTP mail server must also support the selected method.
- None is the default and means that no user / password information is sent to the mail server during login.
- Use POP account means that Calypso will send over the same User ID and Password as specified in the POP settings.
- User supplied allows you to choose a User ID and Password to be sent to the mail server.
- SPA (Secure Password Authentication) makes use of some Windows system components for authenticating to the server. When logging into a SPA server, the connection is passed to a Windows component for authentication. Windows will then determine the best authentication method that is supported by both your computer and the mail server to authenticate the login.
- One other type that is not included in the list is Send after Check. Some mail servers require you to check mail within a minute or so of sending mail. If this is the case, then you must configure Calypso to Send When Checking, instead of Send Immediately. This is set in the Outgoing Mail tab of account properties.

Attachments
- What is "attachment encoding"?
When you send an e-mail attachment, it is modified (encoded) by the e-mail client to ensure smooth travel over the network. When the attachment reaches its destination, the modified pieces must be reconverted (decoded) before the attachment can be read by the recipient.
The sending and receiving e-mail clients must support the same kind of encoding so that the attachment can be received correctly.
- What kind of encoding does Calypso support?
What is UUEncode encoding?
What is Base64 encoding?
What is BinHex encoding?
Calypso supports the following encoding techniques:
- UUEncode
UNIX standard for encoding binary data as ASCII.
- Base64
File format using 64 ASCII characters to encode the six bit binary data values 0-63. Because Base64 must be used in conjunction with MIME, this option is disabled if Use MIME is not selected in the Attachments tab of Mailbox properties.
This is the default encoding method.
- BinHex
Macintosh format for representing a binary file using only printable characters. The file is converted to lines of letters, numbers and punctuation.
The sending and receiving e-mail clients must support the same kind of encoding so that the attachment can be received correctly.
- What is MIME?
A standard for multi-part, multimedia electronic mail messages and World Wide Web hypertext documents on the Internet that provides the ability to transfer non-ASCII data. You may want to use MIME with all three of the encoding techniques because if your recipients do have MIME, they will be able to read the MIME headers along with the body of the attachment.
- I sent a message with an attachment to someone using a different e-mail program, and the attachment is corrupted.
I received a message with an attachment from someone using a different e-mail program, and the attachment is corrupted.
Both e-mail programs (the sender's and recipient's) must support the same type of encoding for the attachment to be sent and received successfully. Calypso supports three types of encoding.
If you don't know what type of encoding the other person's e-mail program supports, you can try sending attachments in all of the possible formats:
- MIME enabled with Base 64
- MIME enabled with BinHex
- MIME enabled with UUEncode
- MIME disabled with BinHex
- MIME disabled with UUEncode
To enable or disable MIME, select or clear the Use MIME check box in the Attachments tab of Mailbox properties.
- Where are my attachment files and how do I access them?
Attachments are saved with the message in the Calypso mailbox database. To access an attachment, double-click the message in the summary list. Using the right-click menu for the attachment, you can view, delete or save the file.
There are several ways to automatically save attachments to your hard drive.
- Can I save attachments to my hard drive automatically?
By default, attachments are saved with the message in the Calypso mailbox database. Starting with Calypso version 2.4, you can save attachments using filters.
If your version of Calypso is earlier than 2.4, double-click the message in the summary list. Use the right-click menu for the attachment to save the file.
- Attachment Long Filename Problem
MCS has tested Calypso and verified that it is not susceptible to the Attachment Long Filename problem recently found in Microsoft and Netscape e-mail programs.
However, the testing did reveal a program bug when processing attachments with filenames longer than 79 characters.
Sending an attachment with a filename longer than 79 characters causes Calypso to abnormally terminate. To recover, re-open the mailbox.
Receiving an attachment with a filename longer than 79 characters causes Calypso to jumble some characters past the 79th character. The attachment is intact and may be saved to disk with any filename (including the jumbled filename).
With attachment long filenames as the center of attention, this problem has been corrected and posted on this Web site as an update to version 2.40.41.07 (To check your full Calypso version number, go to the Calypso Help menu and click "About Calypso | More").
To update: Download and run the latest release from this Web site.

Address Book
- Can multiple users share the same address book?
Version 2.x:
No, not directly. The address book is part of the mailbox database which can only be opened by one user at a time.
You can import the address book from each other's mailbox. If you only want the other user to have some of your address book, you could export selected entries to a file, and then the other person could import the exported file. See the online Help for more information about exporting and importing address books.
Version 3.x:
Version 3 will also support the global address book.
- Can I import the address book from another e-mail program to Calypso?
Yes, with Calypso, you can import the address book from the following e-mail programs:
- 2.x
- Calypso Version 1
- Calypso Version 2
- Eudora
- Microsoft Exchange
- Netscape Version 3.x
- OUI 1.9.2 Pro
- Netscape Version 4.x (LDIF format)
If your old e-mail application is not one of those listed above, you may be able to import the address book as an ASCII delimited file. The address book for the other e-mail application must already be stored in an ASCII file or you must be able to export the address book to an ASCII file. See the Calypso online Help for more information about importing address books.
- When using Calypso with Time & Chaos, I can't create any groups
Currently, groups are not supported in the Time & Chaos address book.
- What is the global address book?
The global address book is an address file saved as an ASCII delimited file. This file is placed on a shared network drive. Calypso version 3.x users can import this file into their local address book. Users will not be able to update the global address book. Global address entries appear in the local Calypso address book.
- What is the maximum length of an e-mail address in the Calypso address book?
Why does a Eudora address book with a long e-mail address get truncated when imported by Calypso?
The e-mail address in a Calypso address book entry can be a maximum of 128 characters.
Some e-mail programs, like Eudora, allow you to create an address book entry with multiple addresses. Eudora seems to have an unlimited e-mail address field, so when you import Eudora address book to Calypso, longer addresses will be truncated.
You can specify multiple e-mail addresses for a Calypso address book entry if each address is separated by a comma.
To convert your OUI address book to Calypso, see instructions here.
- What is the maximum number of address book entries?
The address book does not have a maximum number of entries. It is limited by the amount of disk space on your system.
- What is the maximum number of entries in the Favorites list?
The maximum is 50.
- What is an address book Favorite?
A Favorite is an entry in the address book that you use frequently. In Compose view, you can select a Favorite address by right-clicking in the To, Copy, or Blind Copy fields. See the Calypso online Help for more information about Favorites.
- What is a Mail Template?
Version 2.x:
A Mail Template is a type of address book entry that assists you with frequent mailings. It allows you to set which recipients will be in the To, Copy and Blind Copy fields.
Calypso version 2.x does not support predefined messages or ready-to-use responses.
Version 3.x:
Mail templates will still behave as above, but now you can create predefined messages. In other words, you can create and save messages that can be sent out as needed to different recipients.
Users frequently use Blind Send with bulk mail.
